John "Moe" Hester Sr.

John R “Moe” Hester Sr, age 88, of Norwalk, passed away Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Gaymont Nursing Center.

Moe was born June 12, 1929 in Norwalk to the late Webb and Mary Hester. He was a graduate of Norwalk High School and worked after school setting pins at Kenilee Lanes bowling alley. Moe served in the Merchant Marines on the Great Lakes and worked at New departure-Hyatt. Moe proudly served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict then returning back to New Departure-Hyatt, retiring after 42 ½ years. He was known to have made the 10 millionth gas cap and received recognition. Moe and his wife, Mary Jane owned and operated MJ Country Crafts in Greenwich, and enjoyed working part-time as a deliveryman for Ebert’s and Shipley’s Office Supply. In his spare time Moe enjoyed old cars, Cleveland sports, yard work, was a master wood worker, camping, dancing and was best known for playing pool, “If you didn’t break the balls, you didn’t get a shot” and spending time with his family and dog. He attended the First Baptist Church in Norwalk, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and VFW Post 2743.

Moe is survived by his children, Sandra (Mike) Loyer of Norwalk, John (Donna) Hester Jr. of Norwalk, James (Lisa) Hester of Medina, Amy Sue (John) Turner of MI and Lisa Ann Schmuck of PA; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Moe was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Dorthea (Harris) Hester in 1965; 2nd wife, Mary Jane (Mitts) Hester in 2009; siblings, James, Findlay, Jane, twins Mary and Maybelle, and Elizabeth.

Friends may call on Monday from 11:00 A.M. until time of service at 1:00 at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk. The Rev. Dr. Tara Henderson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Hester Cemetery.
