Alexander Schaffer

Alexander Schaffer, age 100 and 10 months, of Norwalk, went home to his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

He was born June 4, 1923, in Norwalk to Leonard and Frances (Hohler) Schaffer. He was one of 12 children and the last one living. Up to the day he passed he could tell you who everyone in Peru was related to and where they farmed. Alex proudly served in the US Navy during WWII on the USS LSM52. He was stationed in the South Pacific, and his ship was involved in 12 battles.  Alex married Elizabeth “Betty” Frey on June 25, 1949, and together they raised seven children. He worked as a mechanic for Norwalk Truckline and Interstate Trucking until his retirement. He enjoyed playing cards and going to the casino, but nothing made him happier than being with his family.

He is survived by his daughters, Monica Schaffer, Mary (Roddy) Holland, and Alexis (Darrell) Moll; sons, Raymond and Brian; 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents Alex was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Schaffer in 2018; sons, Jim and Steve; grandchildren, Shannon Schaffer and Angie Nida; brothers, Arnold, Pete, Fred, Joe, Leonard, Bernard and John; Sisters, Mary Frances Marie, Ophelia, Margaret and sister Leonarda.

Friends may call Sunday, April 7, 2024, from 2:00 – 5:00 P.M. at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Settlement Road, Norwalk with Fr. Chris Jesudhason officiating. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
